where e e IR", b e IR" and A is an m x n matrix. In the last four years there has been a vast amount of work on "interior point" algorithms, motivated by Karmarkar's algorithm [16]. Unlike the traditional simplex method which moves from vertex to vertex around the feasible region {x;>4x > b}, interior point methods proceed through the interior {x;Ax > b] of the feasible region. Karmarkar's algorithm is a "projective" interior point algorithm, the basic computation for each iteration being a projective transformation. In the last four years another breed of interior point algorithms has received a lot of attention, "path-following" algorithms. These are closer to traditional numerical analysis than are projective algorithms, having Newton's method at their heart. The best upper bounds known for the complexity of linear programming are based on the analysis of particular path-following algorithms. Following are the simple ideas behind the first path-following algorithm proven to have a polynomial-time bound. Let af denote the /-th row of the constraint matrix A. The center of the system of linear inequalities Ax ^ b is the point z which maximizes Yl^fx — b/), viewed as a function restricted to the feasible region. The center exists and is unique if the feasible region is bounded and has nonempty interior, as we assume in what follows. Equivalently, then, the center is

On the combinatorial and algebraic complexity of Quanti erEliminationS

In this paper we give a new algorithm for performing quantiier elimination from rst order formulae over real closed elds. This algorithm improves the complexity of the asymptotically fastest algorithm for this problem, known to this date. A new feature of our algorithm is that the role of the algebraic part (the dependence on the degrees of the input polynomials) and the combinatorial part (the...

On second derivative 3-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff methods for stiff ODEs: A-stable up to order 10 with variable stepsize

Variable-step (VS) second derivative $k$-step $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff--Obrechkoff (HBO) methods of order $p=(k+3)$, denoted by HBO$(p)$ are constructed as a combination of linear $k$-step methods of order $(p-2)$ and a second derivative two-step diagonally implicit $3$-stage Hermite--Birkhoff method of order 5 (DIHB5) for solving stiff ordinary differential equations. The main reason for co...

Complexity Reduction Approach with Jacobi Iterative Method for Solving Composite Trapezoidal Algebraic Equations

In this paper, application of the complexity reduction approach based on halfand quarter-sweep iteration concepts with Jacobi iterative method for solving composite trapezoidal (CT) algebraic equations is discussed. The performances of the methods for CT algebraic equations are comparatively studied by their application in solving linear Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. Furthermo...

Biorthogonal cubic Hermite spline multiwavelets on the interval for solving the fractional optimal control problems

In this paper, a new numerical method for solving fractional optimal control problems (FOCPs) is presented. The fractional derivative in the dynamic system is described in the Caputo sense. The method is based upon biorthogonal cubic Hermite spline multiwavelets approximations. The properties of biorthogonal multiwavelets are first given. The operational matrix of fractional Riemann-Lioville in...

An Efficient Numerical Algorithm For Solving Linear Differential Equations of Arbitrary Order And Coefficients

Referring to one of the recent works of the authors, presented in~cite{differentialbpf}, for numerical solution of linear differential equations, an alternative scheme is proposed in this article to considerably improve the accuracy and efficiency. For this purpose, triangular functions as a set of orthogonal functions are used. By using a special representation of the vector forms of triangula...

On the intrinsic complexity of elimination problems in effective Algebraic Geometry

The representation of polynomials by arithmetic circuits evaluating them is an alternative data structure which allowed considerable progress in polynomial equation solving in the last fifteen years. We present a circuit based computation model which captures all known symbolic elimination algorithms in effective algebraic geometry and show the intrinsically exponential complexity character of ...
